eco-AIR (Low Profile Cascade Aerator)

In simpler days, most wastewater treatment facilities were not required to meet dissolved oxygen (DO) limits as criteria for discharge. Today, regulations imposed by federal and state agencies typically specify a minimum DO concentration of 6 milligrams per liter (MG/L), depending on the receiving stream requirements. Many wastewater treatment facilities have been forced to add post-aeration to achieve compliance.

All aeration methods are designed to increase the DO level in the effluent by creating a greater amount of contact between air and water to enhance the transfer of oxygen. Traditional cascade aerators utilize great heights to allow the water to fall steeply from step to step into splash zones, with significant elevation changes needed to accommodate this process.

In the 1990’s engineers wisely developed a concept for utilizing the power of nature along with a unique low profile design to achieve required DO levels. Hence, what became the JMS Eco-AIR (Low Profile Cascade Aerator) was developed. Since then, JMS designers have taken it a step further with the new patented Eco-AIR (Low Profile Cascade Aerator). Based on the same principles, the new Eco-AIR (Low Profile Cascade Aerator) has added advanced design concepts to provide exceptional performance throughout the full range of daily effluent flow. Learn more about what are the DO requirements that states are facing and why.

JMS Eco-AIR (Low Profile Cascade Aerator) Key Features

JMS Eco-AIR (Low Profile Cascade Aerator) Air Infusion Plates

Air Infusion Plates and Leaping Weirs

The core component of the JMS Eco-AIR (Low Profile Cascade Aerator) is the leaping weir assembly. This stationary assembly allows for optimal velocity and pressure changes. Patented air infusion plates maximize the air to water mixture increasing effluent DO levels.

JMS Eco-AIR (Low Profile Cascade Aerator) Influent Flow Control Gate

Influent Control Gate

The JMS Eco-AIR (Low Profile Cascade Aerator) uses patented Influent Control Gates. The Influent Control Gate is designed for optimal perfomance for low or peak flow rates. Each individual channel width is optimized for plant’s full range of flow.

JMS Eco-AIr (Low Profile Cascade Aerator) Minimum Flow Control Gate

Minimum Flow Control Gate

The JMS Eco-AIR (Low Profile Cascade Aerator) design includes a Minimum Flow Control Gate to allow control for variable influent flow rates.

High Profile Features

Unlike prior cascade designs, where water falls steeply from step to step requiring great depth for installation, the Eco-AIR (Low Profile Cascade Aerator) utilizes optimum slopes of less than 5.5 degrees. Each channel is fitted with a series of patented trapezoidal air infusion plates with leaping weirs, staged to create velocity and pressure changes throughout the length of the channel.

Influent flow control gates are trapezoidal in shape and serve as flow control weirs as well as submerged orifices when flows demand. The first stage channel is designed for the minimum hydraulic flow rate of the treatment facility being served, and individual channel widths are optimized for job specific application flow rates. This special design insures even channel flow for all channels at low or peak influent flow rates.

The high-tech, precision design of the patented Eco-AIR (Low Profile Cascade Aerator) system enables it to do what no other post-aeration system has ever been able to do. Its ecologically-friendly day-to-day operation is so incredibly simple that it requires no external power of any kind and virtually no maintenance whatsoever. The unit is compact, self-contained, and designed for minimal installation expense.

The patented Eco-AIR (Low Profile Cascade Aerator) comes as a palletized, pre-assembled (to the furthest extent possible) insert for installation in a basin or channel, or a packaged unit with serpentine design that can be applied to meet DO requirements in low flow situations. Each JMS design offers customers a cost effective way to meet federal regulations for both existing and new treatment systems. The new patented Eco-AIR (Low Profile Cascade Aerator) takes the next step in revolutionizing the post aeration marketplace.

JMS Eco-AIR (Low Profile Cascade Aerator) Success Story

JMS Eco-AIR (Low Profile Cascade Aerator) Arlington, TN

About 25 miles northeast of Memphis, Tennessee sits the historic town of Arlington, dating back to the 1830’s. There, the Western Tennessee Waterworks operates the Arlington Wastewater Treatment Plant which was commissioned in 2007 to serve residents in this growing area. To insure that their plant meets all state and federal regulations for the discharge of effluent into Scotts Creek they included the JMS Eco-Air (Low Profile Cascade Aerator) in their design. Working with a local engineering firm, JMS Application Specialists recommended a 21 by 24 feet Eco-AIR (Low Profile Cascade Aerator) installation, capable of a peak hydraulic loading of 12 million gallons per day, to increase the DO content of the plant’s flow to a mimimum of 6.0 MG/L.

The Eco-AIR (Low Profile Cascade Aerator) arrived at the site in three sections, and with its small footprint was quickly installed and commissioned. Use of the Eco-AIR (Low Profile Cascade Aerator) soon surpassed their expectations, and six years later, the Town of Arlington Public Works Superintendent praises it’s low maintenance, problem-free operation. In fact, he says the only maintenance needed has been a wash-down a couple of times per year. Daily testing confirms that they consistently meet or exceed their 6.0 MG/L DO requirement. With no moving parts, the ecologically-friendly Eco-AIR (Low Profile Cascade Aerator) has also offered them very low operating costs.
